Automotive Technology News : Cassava-fueled Cars Test Succeeds

National Committee of Indonesian Society in Cooperation with Energi Karya Mandiri, an Non Governmental Organization based in Surabaya, has developed fuel for automobiles made of bio-ethanol extract from cassava. The research on it has been done since approximately nine months ago and now the result is to be tested for usage with much longer distance. Seven cars, all have been fueled with bio-ethanol, are parked and ready to go from Surabaya to Jakarta nonstop in one day.

On previous occasions, the bio-ethanol-fueled cars were only tested to go for a certain short distance around the city of Surabaya. The total numbers of cars which were used during previous tests is 1200 cars. The cars tested are specified in 3 groups. One group used the 50% Bio-Ethanol fuel (E-50), another used the 75% Bio-Ethanol fuel (E-75), while the last one used 100% Bio-Ethanol fuel (E-100). Among the cars using E-50 are Kijang Innova , Luxio, and BMW. The Avanza used E-75, and a 1990-manufactured car used the E-100. The E-100 is purely Bio-Ethanol fuel, while E-50 and E-75 mixes Bio-Ethanol with conventional gasoline, Premium.

The use of Bio-Ethanol economically benefits the user. Only 1 liter of Bio-Ethanol is used for a 14-kilometer-travel. While only 6 kilograms of cassava needed to make 1 liter of Bio-Ethanol fuel. The cassava used to make this fuel is an engineered cassava resulted from a mixture between local cassava and the Thailand’s cassava which can fruit 50 kilograms after nine months. One kilogram of the…
