Mobile Museum
Artist In Residence Application

Make it- Show it- Take it! Fossil fuel free and unattached to the sticky mess that goes with stationary cultural spaces, the Mobile Museum is ready for your work!

WHAT?

The Mobile Museum, in the spirit of open-content information resources like wikipedia and web-blogs, is a borrow-able, malleable resource! Take it to a block near you, take it to another city- take it to your mom’s house in North Carolina!

The Mobile museum is ready to take your artwork or invention to distant locations. You make the work- you determine the place of exhibition, you take the cart to as many destinations as you like!   Meet your audience- get face to face feedback – finally be able to say all you’ve wanted to in setting of your choosing. The Mobile Museum is an effort to keep creative experiences tactile and accessible!!!!

Because the distance between creators and the rest of the world has become unbearable…

 WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Any artists or inventor. Weight will be given to individuals whose work is difficult to place in a gallery (or typical arts space) context and whose practice shows a serious and innovative level of determination. Of specific interest are works whose content is magnified by a mobile context.

WHEN?

Show dates are available beginning the 1st June of 2008 and run to October 31st 2008. Shows can last a few days and up to a month. The project manager Ally Reeves, can help you arrange show dates and become familiar with using the bike and cart the Mobile Museum sits on. Depending on the length of show you will be fully or partially accompanied as you show your work. The length of shows will be dependent on the number of applicants who are approved for use of the Mobile Museum yearly.

Fill out the form below and submit your idea today, for the opportunity to use the Mobile Museum in 2008! Assistance will be provided in the form of media and material promotions, as well as guidance in setting up show locations and the nuances for showing in informal spaces (if desired).

I’m interested!

Name:______________

Address:____________________________________________
          _____________________________________________

Phone: ___________________

Include:

  1. A resume that contains an artist’s statement (give me a couple paragraphs) that tells me about your work, previous show or projects (include dates and locations)
  1. A statement about why you’d like to work with the Mobile Museum.
  1. Images of your work (10 imgs., jpg, or pdf files, max. resolution 180dpi, max. size 7"x7")on a CD, printed photographs, actual photographs, or slides if you prefer. Please label them with dates and descriptions or titles if applicable. Please include a self addressed and stamped envelope for return of your application materials if you would like them back.

IMPORTANT:We can look to web pages if this is an available resource. Information may also be sent(Neatly!) in an e-mail and. Please attach required items and label them accordingly, i.e. “statement”, “experience”, “image of a SNAKE, 1999”, etc.

ALSO IMPORTANT: The Mobile Museum is obviously not your typical show space. If you are considering putting things in the museum think of these concerns:

Things shown in the Mobile Museum get shaken around like crazy. WE HIT POTHOLES. Work that is somewhat durable is preferred. We can also pad things though, and have carried breakables. We do the best we can to protect and care for your work, but are not able to compensate artists for damages.

The Mobile Museum (MM) is mostly waterproof but is not 100% watertight. When it rains the cart should not be shown for both your safety and the safety of your work. The MM is seasonal and for the most part, avoids showing at times when outdoor viewers are unlikely, and weather is inhospitable. For this reason, most shows should be requested in the warmer months.

In regards to the actual showing of your work, as a resident of Pittsburgh, the MM project manager, Ally Reeves, is quiet happy to help artists begin to show and orient themselves to the city and preferable show spaces or events. Depending on how complex your show is, you should be prepared to orchestrate some appearances or showings on your own as well. Assistance will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
